b) Facing slightly down
c) Straight ahead
d) Pick a spot high on the wall and stare at it during the exercise

I would give it a guess but is it slightly upwards to maintain balance?

The best position for the head is straight ahead. The aim is to retain what is known as a "neutral spine." This is true of any and all exercises. A neutral spine is what is achieved when you stand upright with the head straight. This is the safest position for the spine.
