Which body mass index falls within the "normal" classification range?

a) 19
b) 25
c) 15
d) 18

ANSWER: a) 19

EXPLANATION: This question requires familiarity with the body mass index (BMI) classification tables. The classifications are as follows:

Underweight = <18.5
Normal weight = 18.5–24.9
Overweight = 25–29.9
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

BMI is considered a fairly reliable indicator of a person's bodyfat percentage, bodyweight, and/or health risk. It is probably the fastest, least invasive method for determining weight class in large groups, entire countries, or even the world.

BMI is based solely on height and weight. Calculate your BMI using the following steps:

- Multiply your weight in pounds by 703
- Divide the answer by your height in inches
- Divide the answer by your height in inches again
- Check the BMI table to determine weight classification

Since BMI is based solely on height and weight, it is generally not accurate for athletes and other populations. Many pro American football players would fall into the "obese" category, despite low to normal bodyfat levels.

BMI should not be confused with bodyfat percentage. BMI values are not percentages. They are simply numeric labels that correspond to arbitrary/subjective weight classifications that are based on social norms which were established in the 1940s when people were a lot smaller in size.

Yep. It's generally not recommended for individual use. But great for getting an idea of the health/weight status of larger groups; as in an entire corporation. This is also how they determine that 60-65% of the population is overweight or obese.
