The primary function of the calf muscle is to extend foot at the ankle joint (technically called plantar flexion). The calf muscles are used any time you walk, run, or jump. The standing toe raise is a great way to work the calf muscles. This exercise is also referred to as the standing calf raise.

Place a stability ball against a wall and lean your stomach directly on the ball. Your feet should be about shoulder width apart to perform the exercise. Slowly raise and lower your heels, letting your body roll with the ball. A step or platform can be used to add difficulty to the exercise.
